Crystal River Florida Manatee Tours recommends you book with
us, saving time and money. The very best way to view the West
Indian manatees
is with guided manatee tours in the beautiful waters of
Crystal River and Homosassa Springs. It is a once in a
lifetime experience, and should never be missed. We at SwimWithAManatee.biz work with many of the areas
finest private captains to
place you on the best manatee tours for your group. We are
dedicated to the West Indian sea cow
and friends.
The manatees are large,
gray aquatic mammals with bodies that taper to a flat,
paddle-shaped tail. They have two forelimbs, called flippers,
with three to four nails. The manatee head and face are
wrinkled with whiskers on the snout. Manatees are related
to the
Steller's Sea Cow, which was hunted to extinction in 1768.
The average adult manatee is about 10 feet long and
weighs between 800 - 1,200 pounds. They can grow to 13 feet and
weigh as much as 3,000 pounds. Calves are born weighing in
between 60 - 70 pounds and can add as much as 700 pounds in
their first year. Wow, now that's a big baby! During a recent
trip in the waters, we spotted several mamas with their
baby calves close by. Unlike dolphins, they do not have sonar
and when separated for just short amounts of time can result in
a tragic ending. Experienced captains that guide the tours
are not only knowledgeable about Crystal River Florida
but also make sure the potential encounter will be safe for both
manatee
and you.
Crystal River, Florida is the only area where the herds
are growing. The City of Crystal
River and Homosassa Springs area of Citrus County
are very proud of this and residents as well as visitors that
participate in the tours can observe
manatees in their natural habitat. Most tours
have guides that are true professionals and respect the
manatees and the precious environment. This area is an
amazing outdoors paradise during all seasons. Crystal River and Homosassa
have wonderful temperatures and
land and seascapes that provide an ideal place to live or visit
for people and animals! During an encounter you'll realize
that the 72 degree waters flowing to the surface from the Florida
Aquifer in local springs provide warm homes for these gentle
giants. While respect from humans has begun to help the manatee
populations grow there is still much work to be done. In this spirit, we list area
information to the public in reference to interactions and trips
in the Nature Coast of Florida
